Apprenticeship Changes

Apprenticeship Changes

There are important changes coming to the Apprenticeship system.

New rules brought out by central government will be putting education up for auction as Apprenticeship suppliers will now have to submit a bid to provide Apprenticeships under the newly introduced, Apprenticeship Levy.

The Levy is a tax on all employers and will help fund an estimated 30 million Apprenticeships by 2020.

These changes will begin to take place on May 1st 2017 and are expected to lay the groundwork for further education reforms that will be taking place over the next few years.

The aim of these changes is to give employers more freedom of choice when it comes to selecting an Apprenticeship provider, thus optimising their training costs and work place productivity.

What This Means for You as an Employer & Apprentice

Under the new Apprenticeship guidelines the effect on currently employed Apprentices is minimal and therefore will have little impact on your education.

As for employers they will have to start paying a contribution to the Apprenticeship Levy which will be subsidised by the government depending on the size of the organisation and its payroll (The current payroll threshold is £3 Million). Small businesses won’t have to contribute at all if they meet the required criteria of employing fewer than 50 employees, if they are taking on an Apprentice aged 18 or under.

“We are coming up to an interesting change with Apprenticeships and as Director of Learning I would strongly advise employers to consider recruiting Apprentices in order to take advantage of young talent and the passion that young people have in abundance ” – Rachel Kehoe – Director of Learning

Whilst these changes are a complete overall of the Apprenticeship system, it is part of the season of change that 2017 is bringing upon us. During this time the only thing we can do is to keep ourselves informed of what changes are taking place and by keeping faith in those who have helped make LearnPlay Foundation the organisation it is.
